From 1993 onwards, when EA Sports first made its foray with FIFA, many World Cup versions of the game have since hit the markets at regular intervals whenever the premier event approaches. Apart from its regular updates that happen consistently in the game, the World Cup game series is worth taking a look at. So, in the following sections, we take a look at the FIFA World Cup versions and the changes that have accompanied it from its earliest launch till date.
- FIFA International Soccer (1994) – FIFA ’94 was also known as ‘EA Soccer’ and was the earliest World Cup versions of the game, breaking away from the conservative 16-bit games that were prevalent at that time. It offered an isometric view of the game with some of the prominent national teams in it. On the 3DO console, it had pseudo-3D cameras and was the most graphically advanced game of its time. The game that had a version of FIFA 06 was playable on PlayStation 2. The game was successfully sold in Europe under the name of ‘International Soccer’.
- FIFA: Road to World Cup 1998 (1998) – This game marked the start of a new approach in FIFA as it was the last game to use 16-bit consoles. It featured an improved graphics engine, 16 stadia, and all the FIFA national teams with the “Road to World Cup” mode, personalization options for teams and players, enhanced artificial intelligence, and a licensed song from the best artists of the time. The ‘offside rule’ was also correctly implemented in this version and the “Song 2” by Blur was a great addition for any player.
- FIFA Football 2002 (2002) – This version was released on Microsoft Windows, GameCube, PlayStation, and PlayStation 2. In it, power bars came into effect so that dribbling could be minimized and passed could be made more effective so that the challenge levels could be taken a notch higher. Many club emblems for Dutch clubs like Ajax, Feyenoord, and Ajax was made available although the Dutch League was not there in entirety. The Swiss Super League was also made available in it for the first time. A bonus game could also be played with the automatic qualifiers of the World Cup (South Korea, Japan, and France) so that the FIFA ranking could be improved.
- FIFA 06 (2006) – A major overhaul was undertaken for this edition as more than half of the game’s codes were rewritten for it. As a result, major renovations took place that led to abandoning “off the ball” system, the start of “team chemistry” to determine team member’s coordination with each other and a more enhanced Career Mode. The commentators were also replaced in this edition from Ally McCoist and John Motson to Sky Sports’ Andy Gray and ITV’s Clive Tyldesley. Another new feature that was added was the “retro’ section which offered a peek into the game’s earliest versions and the sport and its legends.
- FIFA 10 (2010) – The Manager Mode was extended in it with the inclusion of a new Assistant Manager that can take care of the team as per coming matches and available finances. The “Player Experience and Growth System” of this version gauged a player’s achievement, in-game achievements, and the demands that were placed on him. It also introduced the Russian Premier League along with 31 other leagues and 50 worldwide stadia. It offered player control in 360 degrees to users rather than the previous 8-direction control.
- FIFA 14 (2014) – For Xbox One and PlayStation 4, it introduced Ignite that provided superb graphical enhancements and gameplay changes. The Co-op Seasons online mode was also started in this edition by which two players for the same team could play a full season! For the first time, it featured the top leagues of Chile, Colombia, and Argentina. The PC version of this edition did not feature Ignite but rather had Impact engine with all the stated features. New goal celebrations were also a part of this version and featured international stars like Lionel Messi, Christiano Ronaldo, etc.
- FIFA 19 (2018) – This version has the ‘Ultimate Team ICONS’ on every system – PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. It also features the national football team of Iceland, Turkish Super League, Germany’s third-tier Bundesliga, and the men’s and women’s national teams of New Zealand. ‘Quick Subs’ for making substitutes for a player and ‘The Cryuff Turn’ were also introduced in this version.
